Home > Classical, Jazzy or Modern: Matching Your Personality to the Perfect Wedding Music Style With a Pianist for Weddings

The doors open. Silence, then the initial gentle peals waft down the aisle, and all heads are turned. And I’ve seen that moment a thousand times, and it still does me in.

I'm Ian Towers, a Bristol-based pianist for weddings, and I truly believe the music should sound like the couple, not like a stock playlist. Picking a style can feel tricky, though. Classical, jazzy, modern: they all work, but not for everyone.

So here's how I help couples decide. Imagine this as a chat over tea, with a piano in the background. By the end, you’ll know precisely what sound suits you.

Movement I: Classical Grace for Aisles That Deserve a Hush

Your Bridal Entrance, Rewritten for One Piano

Take your bridal entrance song. It could be a pop ditty you dig, or a movie score. I’ll make it into a classical piano piece, composed just for you. It sounds familiar yet new. Guests often can't place it straight away, then they smile. That's the bit they remember afterward.

Ceremony Music Picked Together, Never Off a Shelf

As a pianist for weddings, ceremony music requires more consideration than you’d think. So I provide an in-person meeting, or a Zoom call or phone chat. We discuss concepts, and I perform tunes for you on my piano. It's the fun part of planning. Book me for the ceremony and this matters most.

Movement II: Jazzy Warmth for Receptions Needing a Little Sparkle

Background Music That Gets Guests Chatting

Jazz is a great choice when people are just socialising. At the drinks reception or the Wedding Breakfast, I can be informal and laid-back; nobody needs to have to shout above the music. They can have a chat, share a joke, and pour themselves another drink whilst I play some great and very accessible jazz for weddings.

The Moment Everyone Realises Their Pianist Also Sings

Then there's the singing. I'll often add a few vocal numbers, and the surprise is always lovely to watch. Guests look over, grinning, as they realise the pianist for weddings is singing too. It pulls a room together in a way solo piano can't. Martha Gray said I “really understood the vibe” of the music they wanted.

Movement III: Modern Favourites Reborn on a Baby Grand Shell

Chart Songs Dressed Up in Piano Arrangements

Remixed doesn't have to mean loud. If you love a song you heard on the radio, I can take that song and do the above with it, but on a 33 RPM record, slow and stripped down, and then put on the piano. These are custom-written to fit, so no one else's will sound the same. Chart hits, film themes, recent favourites: all fair game.

A Stage That Travels With Me

Venues vary, so I bring a setup that adapts. Any pianist for weddings must always handle tight corners and surprise layouts. Here's what I bring along:

  • A Baby Grand Piano Shell housing a fabulous digital piano.
  • Easy to move to another spot in the venue
  • A second piano for bigger occasions
  • A polished, professional appearance

Movement IV: Finding Your Signature Sound

Your Personality, Matched to Music

Not sure where you fit? This table gives you a rough guide.

If You Are... Your Sound Best Moment
Traditional and romantic Classical Ceremony and bridal entrance
Fun and sociable Jazzy Drinks Reception
Trendy and playful Modern Wedding Breakfast

Most couples are a mix, and that's fine. I often blend styles across the day, so nobody has to choose one.

Why Couples and Venues Keep Calling Me Back

I'm a preferred pianist for weddings at Old Down Estate, Coombe Lodge and The Mansion House. Ashley Edmond told me I played “everything beautifully” and it was exactly what they hoped for. I'm based in Bristol and happy to travel, so distance shouldn't stop you.

The Last Chord

No matter what style you select, it should sound like you. Classical, jazzy, modern or a little of everything – it’s your day and your taste is paramount. If you’re in the market to search for a pianist for weddings, who hears before fingers and keys sing, Dream Wedding Pianist will be delighted to hear from you.

Check out my sitar playing and then load up with your own song ideas. Even half-formed ones help. Ring me on 07811 366865 or simply contact me via the form to see if I’m free. Any pianists for weddings get booked early, so it definitely doesn’t hurt to ask early.

I look forward to making your day sound wonderful.

Before the Encore:

1. How early should I book a wedding pianist for my special day?

Six to twelve months out is the standard recommendation, akin to reserving your wedding band. Summer dates go fast, so we suggest booking as early as 1 year in advance to get your desired date.

2. For how long does the typical wedding pianist play on the day?

Most pianists do about 2 hours in total – between the ceremony and the drinks reception. Longer packages covering the wedding breakfast or evening are available, usually with scheduled breaks between sets.

3. Can a pianist perform at an outdoor wedding?

Yes, provided the setup suits it. Battery-powered digital pianos with professional amplification work well outdoors, though couples should confirm power needs, plan weather cover, and agree an indoor back-up location with the pianist beforehand.

4. Are there extra charges for travel or distant venues?

Often, yes. Long miles, double meetings or special equipment? So couples should request a transparent quote that includes mileage, setup time and any hire costs before agreeing to the booking.
